Quick Answer
To choose the right lid size, measure the outer diameter of your pan's rim (not the base) and match it to the lid's nominal size. For a perfect fit, prefer a genuine replacement lid designed for your specific pan model.
Why the outer rim measurement matters
Many people measure the base of the pan, but lids sit on the rim, so the outer diameter of the rim is what counts. A lid that's a few millimeters too small will wobble or let steam escape, while one that's too large may not sit securely.
If you no longer have the original lid, measuring the rim is the most reliable way to find a compatible replacement. Keep in mind that some pans have slightly tapered sides, so the rim diameter can be larger than the base.
Universal vs. genuine replacement lids
Universal lids are designed to fit a range of sizes, but they often don't seal as tightly as a genuine lid made for your specific pan. A genuine replacement lid ensures a perfect fit and maintains the pan's performance, especially for tasks like simmering or steaming.
If you own a pan from a specific range, check whether a spare lid is available for that exact model. This avoids guesswork and guarantees compatibility.
Step-by-step guide to choosing the right lid size
- Measure the outer rim diameter: Place a ruler or measuring tape across the top of the pan, from the outer edge of the rim to the opposite outer edge. Measure in centimeters and round to the nearest whole number. Check that you're measuring the rim, not the base.
- Check the pan's model or range: Look for a stamp or label on the pan's base or handle that indicates the model or range. This helps you find a genuine replacement lid designed for your exact pan. If the model is known, search for a spare lid specific to that range.
- Compare the lid's nominal size with your measurement: Lids are usually labeled by the diameter they fit (e.g., 16cm, 18cm, 20cm). Compare your measurement to the lid's stated size—they should match closely. A lid that's off by more than a few millimeters may not fit securely.
- Consider the lid type and features: Decide between glass or metal lids based on your cooking needs. Glass lets you monitor food without lifting the lid, while metal lids are often more durable. Also check if the lid is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. Choose a lid that suits how you cook and how you clean up.
- Test the fit before purchasing if possible: If you're buying in a store, place the lid on your pan to check that it sits evenly and covers the rim completely. For online purchases, rely on the manufacturer's compatibility list. When in doubt, opt for a genuine replacement lid to avoid fit issues.
